So I got an ask about this a while ago and have been mulling over it, the ask was essentially if I had any tips for first time costume contest entrants.
Ive both judged and won major awards at costume contests in the past, so i’m going to talk first about how to choose your costume and what judges are looking for, and second on how you should prepare and go into the contest! Please note that i’m going to be talking very intensely about how important costume quality is here, that’s because i’m talking about competitions, not regular con cosplay or photoshoots.
On choosing your costume:
- Many people who enter costume contests chose to compete last minute with the costume they have on that day, but for a lot of people like me, we specifically make a costume to compete with and work extra hard on that one. If you’re going to a con knowing you want to enter, costume choice is the key!
- One of the main things to consider if your own level vs the difficulty of the costume. Check your con’s website to see if they divide their contest into experience levels, which generally go Child (12 and under), Novice, Intermediate (or Journeyman) and Masters. Check their requirements (many cons are different) and determine which you are. This is because if you fall into Journeyman, you will want to step up your game from what you would enter in the Novice division, as the competition will be steeper.
